Shooting center giving away rifles to raise money for law enforcement
A shooting center in Colorado Springs is giving away three semi-automatic rifles with proceeds going toward purchasing high-tech vests for local law enforcement.
The promotion is raising money and also eyebrows, with people supporting and opposing the prize items.
“It’s a good idea. It’s a brilliant idea,” said Agim Elshani.
“Giving it away for free is crazy. I know we are in the Wild West but…,” said Oliver Lott.
Magnum Shooting Center marketing director Kim Shugart said proceeds from the giveaway will go towardShield616, a 501(c)3 nonprofit. The organization’s purpose is to outfit law enforcement with rifle-rated gear that officers can put on in 20 seconds.Wildwood Casino is sponsoring the giveaway.
Shugart said people who win an AR-15 will have to pass a background check first. If the winner does not pass, that person will not be able to transfer the prize to someone else.
Still, Lott said he is leery.
“It’s quite ridiculous because from what I know, it’s quite easy to get an assault rifle so giving them away is quite absurd,” said Lott.
Shugart said people who do not like the idea of guns being given away should know that people will be vetted and this kinds of giveaways are common.
“Fire arms are given away all over the country with all kinds of events. Helping them raise money for their organizations,” said Shugart.
The winners will be selected at the end of April.
