Endangered western lowland gorilla born at Denver Zoo
The Denver Zoo says one of its critically endangered western lowland gorillas has given birth to a female.
The zoo said Tuesday the infant named Whimsie Adepa was born Feb. 25. Visitors can see her at the zoo’s Great Apes building.
Her mother is named Tinga. The zoo says this is Tinga’s first offspring and that she’s learning her new role as a mother. She stays with Whimsie Adepa at all times, vocalizing to her and patting her on the back.
The zoo says Whimsie Adepa is the second offspring of her father, Jim, and that he’s been protective and gentle.
Whimsie Adepa is the fifth western lowland gorilla born at the Denver Zoo and the first in 11 years.
