Frontier returns to Colorado Springs Airport
Frontier Airlines left Colorado Springs three years ago because of high costs but lowering those costs brought it back Tuesday.
“I was sort of disappointed when they left the first time, because they were flying to San Diego where my daughter was stationed at the time, so it was easy to just get a flight out of here and not have to drive to Denver,” said Terry Nutall, a passenger.
During a morning news conference at the airport, Frontier President Barry Biffle said lower operating costs by the airline and the airport have increased its chances of long-term success in the market.
“We’re now among the lowest-cost carriers in the U.S. and are fourth (nationally) in on-time performance,” he said. “A lot of things have changed here.”
Frontier will start daily service to Las Vegas on April 14.
“We see a lot of potential for growth,” Biffle said. “Las Vegas is just the start. It’s your number-one destination for most of the United States west of the Mississippi, and so it’s a great way to promote new service.”
Biffle said Frontier will decide later this year whether to add more flights and destinations to and from the city.
Attracting another airline was a goal of Mayor John Suthers and his predecessor, Steve Bach. Suthers said Frontier’s return also could boost tourism in town.
“What about all those folks in Vegas dying of the heat in summer, who want some relief in Colorado?” Suthers said. “I think it’s great news for them also, to have the opportunity to experience the beautiful scenery and attractions that we have to offer.”
Dan Gallagher, the airport’s aviation director, said he understands that many passengers want more flights, more destinations and low fares.
“Small- and medium-sized airports are hurting with the consolidation of the airline industry,” he said. “We’re trying to improve. It’s not easy, but it is a simple, straightforward approach. If we are successful with this new service, additional service most likely will come.”
Passengers had mixed opinions about the Frontier announcement.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” said Linda Musselman, of Woodland Park. “I hope they offer a flight to St. Louis because that’s where I go most, and I’m grateful to hear that they’re coming back.”
George Holt, Jr., was visiting from Alaska.
“This isn’t a very busy airport,” he said. “I don’t really see the need for more airlines. But hey, if they want to come in and make the prices more competitive, then that’s great for Colorado Springs.”
Frontier plans to charge a one-way fare of $59 for the Las Vegas route. An introductory fare of $19 is available.
