Another Broadmoor-area neighborhood affected by landslide

The Skyway area of southwest Colorado Springs isn’t the only neighborhood dealing with a landslide; a neighborhood several miles south is also affected.

Residents in the Broadmoor Bluffs neighborhood said seven homes and a vacant lot have been damaged along a stretch of Broadmoor Bluffs Drive.

City spokeswoman Kim Melchor said only one home is officially considered uninhabitable.

“We’re monitoring the situation,” she said.

Affected residents are determining what can be done to address the problem, and how to pay for repairing the damage.

“We don’t have anything concrete as yet,” said Gordon Brenner, of the city’s Office of Emergency Management. “We’re still working on the process.”

Officials said both landslides have the same cause — record rain earlier this year that soaked sloped ground enough that it slides on bedrock. The Broadmoor Bluffs slide is larger but moving slower, officials said.

However, neighbors said they’re concerned about cracks in their homes and driveways turning into the wider chasms seen in Skyway.

Tim Mitros, the city’s storm water manager, said Broadmoor Bluffs has had a landslide before.

“That one was stopped by putting big caissons into the (bottom) of that slide,” he said. “This slide is going in the opposite direction.”

The Skyway situation affects a home on a cliff at the east end of Constellation Drive, and is affecting homes under the cliff along Zodiac Drive.

Melchor said a family moved out of one home but the city has not officially considered it uninhabitable.

The city said not much can be done to stop the landslides but affected homeowners can apply for low-interest loans to repair damage.
