Update: Fort Carson soldier who died in training identified

The Army is reporting a soldier stationed at Fort Carson has died from injuries suffered during a training accident in California.

Staff Sgt. Christopher Popham, 38, died Wednesday from injuries he suffered in a Stryker vehicle rollover crash Sept. 24 at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, Calif.

Popham was a member of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. He was originally from Prattville, Ala., and joined the Army in 2002. He deployed three times to Iraq during his 13 years in the service. He was a cavalry scout who arrived at Fort Carson in January 2015.

Popham was in the vehicle with two other soldiers when the vehicle rolled onto its side in rough terrain. The other two soldiers were not hurt.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

“The Blackhawk squadron has deeply felt the loss of Staff Sgt. Christopher Popham,” said Lt. Col. Steven Barry, commander, 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div. “A true professional known for always ‘getting it done,’ we will all miss him. In short, he was a great tanker who loved his job and his Soldiers—somebody you would want on your team in a fight. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
