Rocky Ford breeder speaks out after failing inspection and giving up 50 cats
Fifty cats were taken from a breeder in Rocky Ford on Sept. 3.
Catriona Mac Kirnan has bred traditional and classic Siamese cats for the last seven years.
“My cats are very well looked after,” said Mac Kirnan.
Under the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act, breeders are required to pass a yearly inspection. However, Mac Kirnan says animal control showed up unexpected.
“They had arranged the entire thing before they inspected. They had planned to shut me down,” said Mac Kirnan.
Animal control says the home was in unlivable conditions and the cats were in danger.
“I had been gone for a day and half, the litter boxes weren’t as clean as they are, that’s true,” said Mac Kirnan.
Man Kirnan also admits that some kittens had health issues. But she claims there is nothing unlivable about her home and was given no warnings or chances to improve living conditions for the next inspection.
“It was not handled well at all, the city of Rocky Ford was verbally dishonest with me,” said Mac Kirnan.
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region says depending on the situation, animal control is allowed to enter homes if they deem it unsafe for animals.
Mac Kirnan gave consent to give up 50 of the cats and was allowed to keep four.
Her breeding license was revoked.
Most of the cats are still up for adoption at the Denver Dumb Friends League and the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.
