Volunteers help maintain Barr Trail

hiking trails in the pikes peak region. local hikers are taking matters into their own hands… working together to repair and restore some of those trails. new at five… krdo newschannel 13’s zach pagano met with volunteers cleaning a popular trail on pikes peak. it’s a trip up america’s mountain. this group of hikers won’t be on the cog railway for long. we’re going to be looking for those places where the trail is deteriorating. they’re volunteering with an organization called friends of the peak. today… their focus is clearing up portions of barr trail. we have trails all around pikes peak and they’ll deteriorate over time, especially recently with all the rains we’ve had. So we have to get out there and constantly maintain them. hikers say severe weather can seriously damage trails. sometimes a trail becomes a funnel for the water to go down We try to keep rocks and roots out of the trail and it gives us a little bit more stability and it’s a lot safer for people to travel on. for some… cleaning up trails can be the perfect weekend getaway. it could be kind of hard work sometimes, and you get dirty. i have a desk job so i really like getting outside and getting some exercise. and for these outdoor enthusiasts… being “friends of the peak” means taking
