Colorado carjacker convicted of attempted manslaughter

A carjacker who led police on a 75-mile chase in metro Denver and nearly killed a Colorado state trooper has been found guilty of attempted manslaughter and 17 other charges.

A jury in Castle Rock convicted Ryan Stone Wednesday, a day after beginning deliberations.

Stone was charged with attempted first-degree murder for striking Trooper Bellamann Hee during the March 13, 2014 chase, which was televised live and involved officers from a dozen agencies. Jurors rejected that charge and instead found Stone guilty of attempted manslaughter.

Police say the chase started when Stone stole an SUV in Longmont with a 4-year-old boy inside before carjacking two other vehicles during the morning commute. The boy was not hurt. Jurors found him not guilty of a kidnapping charge.
