Fugitive arrested after overnight standoff in Security

El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies took a man into custody after an overnight standoff in Security.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home in the 4900 block of Brant Road, around 11 p.m. on Thursday, to help a bondsman with a man wanted for felony warrants. The warrants included failure to comply with an attempted murder charge.

When the man refused to come outside, a SWAT team entered the home and arrested him without incident.

“When we’re called out to these types of things, compliance is definitely the best way to go,” said. Sgt. Bill Otto, with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. “If we can get them to comply without any force, that’s definitely what we prefer.”

Suzette Martinez said she woke up after hearing sirens. She watched the standoff from her window.

“They told him that they see him at the door, that he needs to come down with his hands up, and he did. He came down with his hands up and laid on the ground,” she said.

Martinez said she was impressed by the way authorities handled the situation.

“They closed down the street to make sure everyone was safe. They did a really good job,” she said. “It makes you feel that you’re safe, because they’re out there protecting the public.”

Lorenzo Brooks is in custody, and will have to answer to the warrants for which he was wanted. The sheriff’s office said Brooks will not face additional charges.
