Police investigating victim of self-inflicted gunshot wound

Police spent much of Monday searching the south side home of a man who went to Penrose Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The man arrived at the hospital around 3:30 a.m. with the self-inflicted injury, police said, which happened at his home in the 1100 block of Montrose Avenue.

Police said their investigation led them to acquire a search warrant for the home and a small trailer parked in the front yard.

“(We wanted) to see if there was the presence of any kind of firearms or dangerous weapons,” said Sgt. Daniel Thompson. “At this point, the investigation’s ongoing.”

Thompson declined to say what was found in the home, or what charges the man may face.

“He’s not a threat to the community,” Thompson said. “He’s being treated at an undisclosed facility.”

Police also helped the Humane Society remove several dogs from the property.

“When we got here, three of the dogs were fighting,” Thompson said. “We want to make sure they’re cared for.”
