“Enjoy those professional fireworks shows”: Law enforcement advocates for a safe Fourth of July
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, the Colorado Springs Fire Department is reminding Coloradans that fireworks are illegal and serious consequences will face those who violate fireworks laws.
Currently, only professionals are legally allowed to use fireworks, and those who misuse fireworks could face up to 189 days in jail, a $2500 fine or a felony charge.
"Fireworks are illegal," said Colorado Springs Fired Department Captain Mike Smaldino. "They're dangerous; people can get injured; they can get killed. Property can be destroyed because of it. And so that's why we just ask you to just enjoy those professional shows.”
Smaldino said the firework bans extend to sparklers, which can burn the skin and clothes of those who get too close to the sparks.
While Coloradans are prohibited from using fireworks themselves, they can attend professional shows throughout the city.
"We want you to enjoy the 4th of July weekend. This is you know, this is a great holiday weekend for us," said Smaldino. "We want you enjoy those barbecues. We don't want the you know, the basically the worst things to happen to you or your family.”
