New computer system allows written driver’s license tests to be taken electronically

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles says it has implemented a new computer system that it hopes will help reduce wait times at the DMV.

The system allows customers to take the written driver’s license test electronically.

“Electronic testing will help us continue our work to reduce wait times and improve our customer experience,” said DMV Senior Director Mike Dixon. “The automated tests offer visual cues and have sound capabilities that improve the testing process.”

When taking a written test for a basic driver’s, motorcycle or commercial driver’s license, you will use a touch screen computer station. When taking the test, you will have the option of reading the test on screen or listening to the test through headphones. Throughout the test, you will be updated on your progress, including the number of questions answered incorrectly, and will be informed immediately upon completion if you have passed or failed.

Previously, all tests were taken with pencil and paper and you had to wait for them to be manually scored by a driver’s license technician.
