Homicide investigation underway Friday near El Paso County Jail in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Police Department said that it is investigating a reported homicide Friday at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center complex.

The crime scene is just off the east end of Las Vegas Street, past the entrance to the complex, and apparently in front of or near the county jail.

CSPD is responding to a reported homicide in the 2700 block of E Las Vegas st. There is no threat to the public. Violent Crimes Detectives have taken over the investigation. More details will be released as appropriate.

Authorities spent several hours at the scene before police confirmed the reported homicide just before 3:30 p.m.; no other details were available as of Friday night, but police said that there is no threat to the public and the department's Violent Crimes Unit is handling the investigation.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said that police are in charge of the investigation because the scene is on city-owned land, even though the complex includes the county jail, the county coroner's office, and other county facilities.

Crime scene tape and flashing law enforcement lights could be seen at the scene from a distance.

The Sheriff's Office established a checkpoint at the complex entrance and allowed only people with official business there to enter.
