Petition to recall 12th Judicial District Attorney Alonzo Payne found ‘sufficient’ by State
DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Department of State announced Thursday that the petition to recall District Attorney Alonzo Payne was found "sufficient as required by statute." Payne is currently the District Attorney for Colorado's 12th Judicial District, which covers the San Luis Valley.
According to the Colorado Secretary of State's Office, on May 26, proponents of the petition to recall Payne managed to gain nearly 1,000 more signatures needed.
Proponents were required to gather 3,996 signatures, equaling 25% of all the votes cast in the previous election for District Attorney in the 12th Judicial District in Colorado. They submitted 5,974 petition signatures to the Elections Division of the Secretary of State's office.
After a line-by-line review, officials determined there were 4,757 valid signatures.
Under Colorado law, officials say there is a 15-day protest period, during which any eligible elector can file a protest with the Secretary of State's Office. Barring a successful protest, after the protest period, the Governor will be responsible for settling an election date.
