Water restrictions in place effective immediately until October amid drought

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- As Southern Colorado heads into its warmer months, Coloradans may find themselves using a little more water to keep their yard green and health. However, Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) is reminding the community to limit their water usage this season by enforcing its Water-Wise Rules as the summer months approach. People who violate these rules may be subject to a fine.

Utility officials started reminding the community on limiting their water usage on Sunday. CSU's committed to working together as a community to practice responsible watering.

"Well, I think the biggest thing that people need to know about these rules is they're designed to conserve and save water. Yes. But, they're also used to maintain beautiful landscapes throughout the community," said Eric Isaacson, the spokesperson for Colorado Springs Utilities.

Water-Wise Rules have been around for awhile. However, utility officials say these rules are being reintroduced. Watering up to three days a week is more than enough to conserve water.

The Water-Wise Rules began Sunday and will go through Saturday, Oct. 15.

According to CSU, the Water-Wise Rules allow Coloradans to water before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. in order to reduce evaporation. In addition, Coloradans are required to repair any sprinkler systems that leak within 10 days. Another rule being enforced is Coloradans must use the shut-off nozzle while washing anything with a hose.

CSU says to only clean hard surfaces like driveways, sidewalks, and patios with water because there is a public health and safety concern.
