Cat rescued from home of kitten killer recovering from unrelated surgery
An outpouring of donations from the community made it possible for Stewie the cat to have a much needed operation, according to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.
Stewie had a congenital condition known as Persistent Right Aortic Arch, or PRAA.
The humane society says PRAA is a condition involving an extra vessel in the heart that wraps around the esophagus. is narrowing in the esophagus caused by the PRAA can lead to many other secondary problems. The surgery involved going into the chest cavity and removing the extra vessel.
Stewie will be staying at HSPPR for the next few weeks as he recovers. He is currently on a liquid diet and will slowly be switched over to dry food as he continues his recovery.
The humane society says Stewie was rescued from the home of Robert Heckmann, 25, of Pueblo. On Thursday, February 13, 2014, Heckmann admitted to videotaping himself torturing and killing Stewie’s brother, Loki.
Heckmann could face jail time of up to 90 days or the judge could sentence him to two years of work release. He could also be subject to probation for an undetermined amount of time.
Heckmann will be back in Pueblo District Court on April 21, 2014 at 2 p.m. A judge will decide then whether to accept Heckmann’s plea agreement. If it is not accepted, there’s a possibility the case could go before a jury.
