Pueblo police investigating homicide after body found in pile of trash

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- Pueblo police are investigating a homicide after a body was found in a pile of garbage Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Pueblo Police Department, concerned neighbors called authorities after noticing a strong stench coming from a house. Neighbors described the smell as a combination of trash and a decomposing body.

Police say investigators arrived on the scene shortly after.

"They could smell what smelt like decaying flesh. They got a search warrant. they are concentrating on these two houses, the white houses and the other and i can confirm that we did find a body in the backyard," Sergeant Frank Ortega said.

The body was found at 320 E. City Center Dr. Police blocked off Chester Ave. at City Center Dr. while crews worked on the scene.

Police say the victim is a man, and he appeared to have been dead for several days on the side of the house. The identity of the victim will be released by the Pueblo County Coroner.

Police say the body was in the process of decomposition, but for exactly how long is still up in the air.

"We are speculating several days," Sergeant Ortega said. "With the body being there for several days we are going to have to have to have the coroner assist us to make that determination."
