Colo. Springs Family’s Home Flooded In Hail Storm

A Colorado Springs family’s home flooded during Wednesday night’s hail storm. Artie Barton and her husband live near the intersection of North Chelton Road and Santa Rosa Street.

She said the flooding happened so fast Wednesday night that she, her husband and their roommate barely had time to react.

“All the windows downstairs were broken out and water was pouring in,” said Barton.

Barton said her entire basement was flooded in minutes and then the water covered about a foot of the ground floor level. She teared up as she talked about her fish that were killed and the pictures and memories that were lost in her basement.

As the water flooded her home, Barton said people who were stranded in their cars outside came in for help. She said they stood on kitchen chairs and sat on the table to stay out of the freezing cold water.

Barton pointed out that they were concerned about hypothermia and did their best to stay warm.

No one suffered serious injuries.

Cleanup continued Thursday as city crews cleared hail from the area.

Barton said she has been getting help from the Red Cross, but she said insurance will not cover the damage to her home because she and her husband did not have flood coverage.
