UPDATE: Satellite Hotel Fire Caused By Careless Smoking
Colorado Springs Fire Department says a fire at the Satellite Hotel this weekend was started by careless smoking.
CSFD was called to the fire at the Satellite Hotel near Airport Road and Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs Saturday night.
Officials say the fire sparked on a 7th floor balcony at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Firefighters found heavy fire on the patio of an apartment but were able to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes.
CSFD says the fire was accidental and started from careless smoking. A cigarette was discarded in a planter box and caught fire. The person who lives in the unit will not be displaced because the fire was contained to the patio.
One person was treated for smoke inhalation.
CSFD would like to remind you to never extinguish cigarettes in potted plants or landscaping, which often contain a mixture of peat moss, shredded wood, and bark, which can easily ignite.
