Man Wanted In El Paso County Captured
A man wanted for attempted murder in El Paso County has been captured in New Mexico.
Officers from the Corrales, New Mexico Police Department arrested Corey Handy on Tuesday, said El Paso County Deputies in a news release.
Handy was wanted for several felony charges, including attempted murder, in El Paso County after he tried to shoot his girlfriend, a good Samaritan, and the Samaritan’s two children on August 10, 2011 in the Cimarron Hills area, said deputies.
After receiving information that Handy may be in New Mexico, On August 26, 2011 they sent Handy’s picture to various law enforcement agencies in the Albuquerque area and during the evening hours of August 30, a Corrales Police Officer saw Handy pushing a motorcycle into a gas station and recognized him from the wanted poster, El Paso Deputies said.
The officer spoke with Handy for a short time while awaiting backup and after back-up arrived Handy attempted to flee, but was corned by officers and a police helicopter a short distance away, said deputies.
Handy was combative upon arrest, said deputies.
Corrales Police transported Handy to the Sandoval County Detention Center in Corrales, where he is being held on the warrant out of El Paso County, said deputies.
The Corrales Police Department said their district attorney’s office will not be pressing charges against Handy for attempting to evade police in order to get him extradited back to El Paso County more quickly, where he will face more serious charges.
The El Paso County District Attorney’s Office will be handling the extradition process, said deputies. Once complete, El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputies will transport Handy back to Colorado to face the charges of criminal attempt, murder in the first degree (four counts), first degree kidnapping, and child abuse, said deputies
