Don Stratton USS Arizona Survivor Exhibit Relocated to Pikes Peak Library District East Library
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- After two years at the Colorado Springs Airport, the Don Stratton USS Arizona Survivor Exhibit has relocated to the Pikes Peak Library District East Library.
The Pikes Peak Legacy Heroes Foundation, hopes that having it here will expose more people to this powerful piece of history.
Don Stratton, a survivor of the USS Arizona and former resident of Colorado Springs, passed away last February; but his legacy lives on at the Pikes Peak Library District’s East Library.
“Men like Donald Stratton, who sacrificed everything for our country and asked for nothing in return, are unbelievable examples to everyone in our community, quite frankly,” said Mark Seglum, Treasurer with the Pikes Peak Legacy Heroes Foundation.
The interactive exhibit displays images and videos of the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor and the history of Stratton’s life.
Stratton was one of only 334 survivors from Arizona’s crew who survived the pearl harbor attack.
“That was so devastating, you think about it all the time, I’m getting to where I don’t want to talk about it all, it just brings back too many memories,” Stratton told KRDO back in 2018.
Those memories are now memorialized through Stratton’s uniform that sits behind glass.
As we approach the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, people can visit the exhibit to mourn the loss and remember what heroes like Donald did for our country.
‘’There’s only just a little over 300,000 veterans of WWII left, and they’re passing at the rate of over thousand day. It is really incumbent upon all of us to preserve that part of history,” said Seglum.
