Gov. Polis visits local businesses in Southern Colorado

SOUTHERN COLORADO (KRDO) -- After Governor Jared Polis visited the Broadmoor World Arena Wednesday morning to tour El Paso Colorado's mass vaccination site, he stopped by a couple of local businesses.

Governor Polis first visited the Kinship Landing, a new hotel in downtown Colorado Springs that opened about a week ago.

"He's optimistic, as are we, that travel is going to open up here shortly and there is going to be a demand where people are going to choose to travel safely through the summer into the next year," said Bobby Mikulus, CEO of Kinship Landing.

Gov. Polis said he believes the future of the hospitality and tourism industry in Colorado looks bright.

"I think hospitality is going to have a great year, I mean as people are getting over this pandemic, getting vaccinated, getting protected, they are getting out, especially with the federal stimulus, they are getting $1,400 bucks, they are getting the cabin fever and they are ready to explore," expressed Gov. Polis.

Throughout Southern Colorado, hotels and restaurants have taken a hard hit during this pandemic. Gov. Polis says the new stimulus checks could have a positive impact on these industries.

"Some people need it like they lost their job or will use it for rent, but most families, this can go into a savings fund or a family vacation, especially if they've been cooped up together with homeschooling…they are ready to go somewhere," added Gov. Polis.

The governor and his team also paid a visit to 'El Taco y La Arepa' a Venezuelan and Mexican grill that opened its doors just a year ago.

Maria Los Angeles Silva one of the owners of the restaurant, says it has been a tough year for their restaurant.

"It has been a miracle that we have survived this pandemic and even more now that we are just getting started and don't have as many clients," added Silva. Businesses in the area are hoping the CARES act will help as the City of Colorado Springs is to receive $76.77 million in funding.
