COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management is urging Coloradans to prepare their homes and vehicles in amid persisting below average temperatures and snow.

Officials suggest having a plan in place that involves everyone in your household, including kids. The plan should encompass directions for both travel and sheltering in place.

Things you need in your vehicle during a winter weather storm:

  • first-aid kit
  • clothes, including warm jackets, for every member of your family
  • snow chains
  • high-protein food/water
  • phone charger
  • wool blankets
  • shovel
  • hazard vest
  • emergency, solar powered radio
  • flashlight

Officials suggest when sheltering in place, you prepare for power outages by having a generator on hand. However, before using one, make sure you have carbon monoxide detectors set up in your home.

Other things to have ready in your home in case of a winter storm:

  • medications/medical equipment
  • list of emergency contacts

  • non-perishable foods
  • flashlights
