Woodland Park community comes together for vigil to remember Kelsey Berreth

WOODLAND PARK, Colo.-- Friday marks one year since Woodland Park mother Kelsey Berreth was killed. In honor of her memory scores of residents came out to pray, to remember, and to find comfort in each other's presence.

Those living in the city above the clouds gathered in Memorial Park. The cold weather not stopping them from remembering Kelsey and beginning the healing process. A process delayed by the uncertainty of the Patrick Frazee trial.

The candlelight vigil was put together by the Woodland Park Police Department. Nina Allmond with WPPD says, "Tonight is all about closure for the community they helped our agency tremendously throughout the last year and tonight it is about Kelsey and memorializing her."

Residents of all ages were holding candles and each other. Margo Hill with Northeast Teller Fire Department says, "I just think leaning on each other and being supportive of one and other and since we are helping each other through this then we can just move on."

Kelsey's story heard across the nation. A story those living in Woodland Park couldn't avoid. So they relied on each other for strength. "A lot of people here didn't know her," says resident Mark Agan, "but this town is so small that everybody rallies behind any kind of tragedy or a loss we all come together."

One of the speakers was Police Chief Miles De Young. He says even he leaned on the community through this almost insurmountable experience.

"We've had so many tips, 400 to 600 tips came in on this case that we were able to work on and that was incredible and everybody was willing to help us," De Young says adding with the answers they received this week, the town and it's people will bounce back.

"I think it is absolutely possible that we will return to normal. Our community is very strong, very resilient," De Young says.

On Saturday, a celebration of life ceremony will be held for Kelsey at Woodland Park SDA Church at 2:00 pm. It is open to the public.
