KRDO Voter Guide: Dave Williams
Republican State Rep. Dave Williams is defending his seat in House District 15, which consists mostly of Colorado Springs and the Cimarron Hills area of El Paso County. Williams has also served as vice-chairman of the El Paso County Republican Party.
What is your top issue for the next legislative session, and how do you plan to fix it?
State Rep. Williams: The coronavirus pandemic and artificial economic shutdown has devastated many families in our state. As the health crisis abates, our goal should be to reopen our economy by getting Coloradans back to work and helping small businesses get back on their feet. We can get the job done by pushing for adequate federal relief while eliminating burdensome state taxation and overregulation that stifles business activity.
How can the legislature address the state's housing and cost of living issues?
Williams: The reason why housing isn’t keeping up with population growth is because there isn’t enough supply being built to match demand. If we want more housing, then we need to create a business environment that encourages more construction while stopping frivolous lawsuits from trial lawyers and discouraging radical environmental policies that prioritize so-called “green space” over people struggling to find homes.
We can further solve the cost of living issue by increasing the housing supply while lowering taxes and regulations on small businesses, which will lower consumer costs and allow job creators to hire more workers at better wages.
Should COVID-19 be handled more at a local level or from a top-level approach in the state?
Williams: Yes. No two cities or counties are alike. A one-size-fits-all approach has been wrong from the start and we need to restore balance by pushing back against the Governor’s top-down orders. Local communities know how to better handle the local health challenges their citizens face and they need to be empowered to make these critical decisions without interference from Denver or Boulder politicians.
