Explosions at Chapel Hills Mall caused by homemade fireworks

Chapel Hills Mall

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Management at the Chapel Hills Mall says the two explosions that happened Saturday night were caused by homemade fireworks.

Officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to several calls about the explosions around 10 p.m. Saturday but didn't initially report what caused them.

Police told mall management the explosions were caused by homemade fireworks on the outskirts of the parking lot, according to Chapel Hills Mall Vice President Sherry Drew.

"They were very far away from the building. They were in one of our furthest parking lots away from the buildings," Drew explained. "There's no damage to the property at all."

Colorado Springs Police told us they're still investigating and don't have any other information at this time. It's unclear if anyone has been arrested.
