Cripple Creek cancels its two biggest summer events due to COVID-19

CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo. (KRDO) - As COVID-19 case numbers climb in Teller County, the City of Cripple Creek has decided to cancel its Salute to American Veterans Rally, and Donkey Derby Days fundraiser.

The announcements come after city leaders say COVID-19 case numbers nearly doubled after Independence Day weekend, now topping off at 89.

City of Cripple Creek spokesperson Jeff Mosher told KRDO city council members voted Thursday to cancel the veterans rally because, if an outbreak had occurred, the city could lose its variance allowing casinos to operate.

"There's a significant economic impact in Cripple Creek if our casinos are shut down. So that's what we're really concerned with - keeping our employees, citizens and service providers healthy," Mosher explained.

The POW/MIA Recognition Ride, which starts in Woodland Park, is still set to happen with added precautions.

The decision to cancel the veterans rally comes just one week after the city's Donkey Derby Days event was canceled.

Donkey Derby Days is the single biggest annual fundraiser for the care and feeding of the donkeys. If you're interested in helping the city with its 2020 fund raising efforts, you can visit its website here.
