Colorado voters narrowly approve legalized sports betting

DENVER (AP) - Colorado voters have approved a ballot measure legalizing sports betting and taxing it to help fund a state water conservation plan.

Tuesday's ballot measure known as Proposition DD had bipartisan support and only token opposition. But the election was so close that the outcome could only be determined Wednesday as the final votes were tallied.

The measure allows Colorado's 33 casinos to start offering wagering on professional, collegiate, motor and Olympic sports in May.

Both in-person and online wagering are allowed.

Legal sports betting has grown since New Jersey won a U.S. Supreme Court case in 2018 allowing all 50 states to offer it.

Colorado is the 19th state to legalize sports betting in some form, along with the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
