Black bear attacks, injures man at Colorado apartment complex

Colorado Parks and Wildlife

EAGLE-VAIL, Colo. (KRDO) -- A man was injured Monday after encountering a female black bear outside the laundry room of an apartment complex near Eagle-Vail, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

Wildlife officials said the adult male was leaving the building's laundry room late Monday afternoon when he encountered the bear. The bear swiped at the man, scratching his arm. He then tripped and injured his foot while trying to get away, according to CPW.

CPW says a family member took the man to the hospital, where he was treated for injuries to his arm and foot. He has since been released and is recovering at home, according to CPW.

CPW officers remained in the area overnight in an effort to capture the sow and her cubs. Officials believe a larger male bear in the area may have prompted the sow and cubs to stay away.

CPW says it has since placed a bear trap in the neighborhood.

CPW is reminding residents that preventing bear conflicts requires a community-wide effort. Residents are encouraged to:

  • Secure trash, animal feed and other potential food sources.
  • Never leave pet food outside.
  • Clean and securely store outdoor grills after use.
  • Keep windows and doors locked, especially when leaving home.
  • Never feed or approach a bear.

If you encounter a black bear, CPW recommends standing still if the bear has not noticed you and quietly moving away. If the bear sees you, slowly back away and do not run. If a bear approaches, hold your ground, wave your arms and yell, "Hey Bear," until it leaves. If a black bear makes contact with you, do not play dead. Fight back aggressively, wildlife officials say.
