Storm impacts shut down two roads in North Cheyenne Cañon Park

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Two roads in Colorado Springs, North Cheyenne Canyon Road and Gold Camp Road in North Cheyenne Cañon Park, received damage over the weekend following a massive storm.  

Large amounts of debris have moved onto North Cheyenne Canyon Road, and storm-related road damage has been identified on Gold Camp Road.

Crews are actively assessing conditions and working to clear affected areas.

This incident comes after the same area experienced a similar issue last year. Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services released photos on social media Sunday morning, showing the extent of the damage, with one side of a road completely caved in.

Park visitor Walter Smith noted the damage to the area near Helen Hunt Falls. "We were planning on going up to the Helen Hunt Falls, but the storm the other night washed the road covered with gravel and rocks. Anytime you're dealing with the mountains, you've got to be flexible," Smith said.

Crews are asking that people respect all closures and avoid the area while they work.

According to the city, there is no access to the following:

• Vehicle access to Helen Hunt Falls
• Powell parking area used to access Seven Bridges Trail
• Bicycles are not permitted on the closed roadways

The city has not yet provided an answer regarding the duration of the closure, but crews have indicated that repairs will not be completed overnight.
