Two displaced by apartment fire as construction crew jumped in to help

Colorado Springs, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) put out an apartment fire at the Hunter Meadows Condominiums on Thursday morning. CSfD said no one was injured, but a cat did die in the flames after a firefighter tried to revive the animal with mouth-to-mouth.

"Another great example of how our firefighters will really do anything for our community, and that includes our pets, too," CSFD spokesperson Ashley Franco said.

CSFD said it arrived at the fire just after 7:30 a.m. and had it put out less than an hour later. Before firefighters arrived on scene, both neighbors and workers with the Gordon construction crew across the street jumped into action to knock on neighbors' doors to help with the evacuation.

"Within two or three minutes, it exploded and got exponentially large," neighbor Aeiryn Boyd said, who knocked on neighbors' doors when he saw the fire break out.

"We were told that before firefighters got on scene, they all jumped the fence and knocked on everyone's door to make sure everyone got out," Franco said about the construction workers.

Franco said they were trying to find out more information about the construction company so CSFD could give their workers an award. KRDO13's Bradley Davis found one of the quick thinkers and broke the news to him.

"Did you know the fire department wants to give you and your buddies who helped an award?" Davis asked.

"I did not, that's super cool," Gordon construction worker Lucas Colvin said. "I would definitely hang it up. I'd put it in the house, first thing people would see."
