Officer and suspect injured in shooting in Colorado Springs

Editor's note: The press conference begins around the 4:26 minute mark.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) confirms there was an officer-involved shooting in the 2600 block of East Bijou.

CSPD says that on Monday afternoon, officers arrived in the area for a fugitive operation. After concluding their operation, an unknown male unrelated to the operation approached officers, CSPD says. Police say this man acted suspiciously and fled from officers, and then shot at them. Two CSPD officers then returned fire, CSPD says.

In a press conference, the police department said that both the officer and the suspect had suffered gunshot wounds.

The police department says that the officer has serious but non-life-threatening injuries. According to CSPD, the suspect is in critical condition.

Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade said on social media Monday evening that he spoke and prayed with the injured officer in the hospital. "[I] am grateful to share that he is expected to be released from the hospital soon. My heart remains with the injured officer, his family, and the entire CSPD family during this incredibly difficult moment," Mayor Mobolade wrote.

While at the scene, KRDO13 approached two women, who said they were relatives of the man who fired shots at the officer and was shot himself. "He got shot... My oldest daughter is in that house. She's in there. My oldest child is in there right now. Saw her brother get shot," said Loraine Foster.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has assumed control of the investigations, as is protocol for any officer-involved shooting. The officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave. It's unclear what exact charges the man who fired at officers could face.
