Two off-duty Department of Corrections staff members dead after car crash in Pueblo West

PUEBLO WEST, Colo. (KRDO) – Colorado State Patrol (CSP) has confirmed two off-duty Department of Corrections (DOC) staff members have died and another two people are hospitalized after a serious crash in Pueblo West on Thursday.
According to CSP, an Audi sedan was traveling at a high speed on South McCulloch Boulevard just before 2 a.m on July 10. The car approached West Idaho Springs Drive, and CSP says it veered off the right side of the road when the driver failed to complete a left curve.
CSP says the car hit an electrical box, a bench, and a trash can before flipping.
The Audi rolled multiple times, causing three of the four occupants, including the driver, to be ejected, CSP said.
The agency confirmed the driver and one passenger died at the scene. Two others were taken to the hospital to be treated for moderate to serious injuries.
Investigators say speed and intoxication are being investigated as possible factors in the crash.
CSP has confirmed that the two who died at the scene were off-duty DOC staff members who worked at the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility (CTCF). At this time, it is not clear if the two injured passengers were also off-duty officers.
The Department of Corrections said the crash "was not part of travel to or from work at CTCF."
"Our department’s immediate and primary focus is on supporting the families of everyone impacted, as well as our staff," the DOC said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to all those who were affected by this tragic incident. We ask for patience and respect for the privacy of the families during this profoundly difficult time."
If anyone was in the area or witnessed the crash, please contact CSP dispatch at 719-544-2424 and
reference CSP case number VC250228.
