Commercial truck drivers prepare for high winds in Colorado
With gusts of wind expected hit as high as 50-60 or even 70 miles per hour on Friday, interstate driving could become pretty sketchy. So how do commercial truck drivers who have to get from point a to point b with large loads handle it?
Daniel Morris, a commercial truck driver traveling to Las Vegas said, “I’ve heard 40-45mph I park. I’m a very safe driver and I’m all about safety. Your life is more important than the load.”
Morris who has been driving truck for 30 years says he has a lot of experience battling wind, and ultimately it’s something you don’t want to mess with.
“I’ve been in a few states where I’ve decided to get off the highway. You park tight to trucks. If you park tight, that keeps the wind from going truck to truck so if it did come over at least the trucks would touch each other and it wouldn’t actually flip over,” said Morris.
The video you are seeing now is from three years ago. Shawn Robinson says the weight of your load really makes a difference in high winds.
“Especially how fast the wind might be coming in and it depends on where the wind is coming from too. If you got like side-draft winds and they get your trailer it goes back and forth so you can feel it if you’re like real, real light.”
So how do they fight it?
Morris said, “Just try and stay at a minimum speed. If you go to fast then you are forcing more wind to come. Stay on the gas pedal and basically just keep it on the road straight, fight the wheel.”
The good news is, the high winds are only expected for Friday things should calm down by Saturday.
