Red light camera to go up at Academy and N. Carefree Circle

The third red light camera in Colorado Springs will be set up in the intersection at Academy Boulevard and N. Carefree Circle pointed in the northbound approach, said CSPD in a press release.

Beginning September 1 through September 30, motorists captured by the cameras running a red light at the Academy Boulevard and North Carefree intersection will be issued a written warning by mail, according to the release. After the 30-day period, cars that enter the intersection when the light turns red will be issued a $75 citation.

Two other red light cameras are currently in operation in the city, one at the eastbound approach of East Platte and Chelton and one at westbound approach of Briargate and Lexington boulevards.

A fourth camera is scheduled to go up sometime later this year at Academy and Dublin boulevards in the southbound approach.

A total of 10 red light cameras will be installed throughout Colorado Springs, with the remaining six intersections to be determined and installed in the future.

“2018 witnessed the highest number of traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs. Intersections can be one of the most dangerous places in the city for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists,” said Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski. “Our goal is to reduce the number of red light runners, thus decreasing the number of violations and their potential for crashes and injuries on our roadways. We want drivers in Colorado Springs to stop on red, drive attentively, and follow the rules of the road.”

According to the release, data shows that red light safety cameras can change driving behavior. City officials chose these locations after evaluating several factors, including crash data and where the technology will have the most impact.
