Colorado Springs mail carrier ‘severely injured’ after dog attack

The United States Postal Service confirmed that one of its mail carriers is recovering in the hospital after being attacked by a dog while making a routine delivery in Colorado Springs this week.

The attack happened on Aug. 6, according to a KRDO viewer who called in the tip. USPS said one of its carriers was delivering mail in the southwest part of town when it happened.

USPS says the carrier rang the doorbell of the home, and when the resident answered, a dog “pushed past and attacked.” The carrier hasn’t been identified.

According to the source who called in the tip, the dog mauled the carrier’s hand. The victim underwent surgery this week and is still in the hospital.

USPS says dog attacks are “preventable through responsible pet ownership.” An official statement from USPS encourages residents to separate their dogs from the front door before opening it, and parents are urged to teach their children to keep dogs secured.
