New Colorado City Post Office location revealed

It’s been more than 30 days since the only post office in Colorado City shutdown. Forcing residents to drive 30 minutes away to Pueblo just to grab their mail.

However, now there is light at the end of the tunnel. Starting on Aug. 2, Colorado City customers will be able to pick up their mail at a new location.

Representatives with the United States Postal Service out of Denver tells KRDO that the building that was set to become a bakery called ‘Brunchies’ will also become the Colorado City’s new post office.

The contract to operate the city’s postal services was awarded to the owners of ‘Brunchies’ earlier this month.

‘Brunchies’ is located at 9048 South I-25 in Colorado City, CO 81004, less than a mile southeast of I-25. There will be no mail pickup for Colorado City residents on Aug. 1 so USPS can transport necessary equipment and mail to the new location.

This is some good news after weeks of frustration here in Colorado city.

“I have to drive all the way to Pueblo just to get my mail, despite not even working in Pueblo,” Colorado City resident Ann Morrison said.

Morrison isn’t alone, for that last month all PO Box Customers in Colorado City have picked up their mail and packages Pueblo Sunset Postal Station.

To receive retail services and send packages, customers could go to four post offices in Pueblo and one in Rye.

Morrison says she isn’t just grabbing mail for herself. “My neighbor, she is 85-years-old, and she has dementia,” Morrison said. “She does not need to be driving into Pueblo to pick up her mail.”

When the old post office located at the 4400 block of Bent Brothers Blvd. closed, the elderly were greatly impacted.

“The older people the people who have lots of medicine,” Louis Guzzo said. “We would get a lot of medicine through the mail for them.” Guzzo was the postmaster in Colorado City for the last 25 years. Earlier this year, at 87-year-old, he chose to retire.

He says he gave U.S. Postal Services 120 days to find someone to take over Colorado City’s postal services. Even offering to lease the post office to them, which he owned.

“But after 120 days they hadn’t done anything,” Guzzo said. “They couldn’t find a place, and they said they wanted a bigger place. I’ve been here forty years, and in forty years we’ve never had to go anywhere to get the mail. We’ve always been able to get the mail here.”

The United States postal service has no response to Guzzo’s comments.

As for the new post office, the location is not open just yet. The Postal Inspection Service requires a number of certain security protocols such as the installation of a security door, secure window coverings, and proper locks before mail is allowed to be stored in the building.

Once that is all approved, Pueblo Postal Services will bring a temporary unit down to Colorado City that will allow the contractor to distribute the mail.

Traci Long, the owner of ‘Brunchies’, says if everything goes according to plan then they will be able to take in mail by the end of the week.

Long says once construction is complete the new post office will be part bakery and part post office and come complete with its own drive-thru. Customers in Colorado City will still need to go to Pueblo or Rye for retail services.

This location will temporarily only receive mail not send it out. Long hopes to be a fully functioning post office by the end of next month.
