Family member identifies suspect killed by Colorado Springs police officer

We have now confirmed through a family member that the person shot by a Colorado Springs police officer Tuesday night near Fountain and Chelton is now dead.

The family member identified the suspect as Joshua Vigil.

The investigation went early into Wednesday morning, as police were still on scene after the officer-involved shooting at the Fountain Garden Apartment Complex. At this point, few details have been released about the shooting.

Just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, police got a call of a man with a gun on Monterey Road.

Lt. Jim Sokolik with CSPD said, “Officers made contact with that individual, he got into his car, and he fled the scene, officers did not pursue him.”

Officers say they found the car crashed. Three officers found him at the Fountain Garden Apartments, then shots were fired.

“During that confrontation with that suspect at least one officer fired at least one shot striking the suspect at least one time,” said Sokolik.

One witness at the scene, who did not want to go on camera, was able to describe what she saw.

“Two shots at first, I came out of my apartment and that’s when you saw an officer in all black, with police written on the back, going after two suspects in Fountain Gardens, and he fired two shots out of his pistol and hit the guy that went to the hospital,” said the witness.

And with standard protocol, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has taken over this investigation.

“We know that at least one officer fired, we know that at least one shot was fired. But that is something that the investigation will reveal as we move forward,” said Jackie Kirby.

No officers were injured in the shooting. Police say there is currently no threat to the public.

We are still waiting for more details on this case. We will keep you updated.
