After killing of Fort Carson soldier, wife could face life in prison

Back in January, we brought you the story of a former Fort Carson soldier who was believed to be killed by his wife. Now, Kemia Hassel has been found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy.

On December 31, Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III was gunned down outside of his father’s home in Michigan.

Tyrone’s father, Tyrone Hassel II, said, “You got to understand man, that this is a person that slept in my home. I spent two weeks with this person after she killed my son. I grieve for her more than I grieve for myself.”

Berrien County Prosecutors say Kemia, who was also in the military, was having an affair with Jeremy Cuellar, a soldier who was stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia.

Prosecutors say Kemia wanted her husband Tyrone’s life insurance and she wanted to be free to pursue a relationship with Cuellar.

Therefore, authorities say Kemia helped Cuellar plan Tyrone’s murder. Cuellar then allegedly drove to Michigan and shot Hassel.

Now, at just 22 years old, Kemia could be facing life in prison. Tyronne’s father said he is relieved with the result.

“It’s the beginning. I guess I could say it’s the beginning of the end, but nothing will bring him back,” said Hassel II.

Kemia will be sentenced August 29. As for Cuellar, he will face trial on August 12. We will continue to keep you updated.
