Video catches fireworks exploding in Colorado man’s pocket

A local man is recovering from a nasty looking burn wound after fireworks exploded in his pocket while they were celebrating Independence Day.

Mandy Campbell tells KRDO a group of people were igniting fireworks in an El Paso County neighborhood, and her boyfriend, Justin Bryden was holding one while the others in his pocket exploded.

He explains, “the next thing I know, it shot up out of hand and then all heck broke loose.”

Sparks could be seen flying up the street in a doorbell camera video shared by Campbell. Now, they are sharing the video to spread the importance of fireworks safety.

Bryden says, “it doesn’t look like anyone can survive that. I should be in pieces after that.”

Campbell said one of the fireworks also shot into her eye and caused bruising.

Both Campbell and Bryden say they bought it years ago and didn’t know the laws surrounding this specific firework.

Now Campbell explains, she wants Bryden’s injuries to serve as a warning to others.

“This is a lesson learned for all of us, not just for him but I told my son to not ever get that close to lighting fireworks anymore,” she says.

It’s not legal to ignite fireworks in the city of Colorado Springs, and only certain fireworks are permitted in El Paso County outside of the city limits. Based on their description of the firework, the one used by Bryden does appear to be illegal.
