Marty’s Sunday Morning Forecast – PM Storms Again – 190630

Overview: As we head into next week a gradual increase in available moisture will increase the coverage of thunderstorms over more areas which should help to cool the air a little. Storms may begin to produce heavy rain at times as well.

Today: Partly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms again most likely over and near the mountains again. Like yesterday severe weather isn’t very likely but stronger cells could produce frequent lightning, gusty wind and brief downpours, and localized cooling of the air should also be expected. The weather for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb should be decent this morning with temperatures warming through the 40s to near 50 by lunchtime, but during the afternoon scattered showers and thunderstorms will cool the air and produce frequent lightning with a mixture of rain, small hail, and possibly even a little snow over the top of Pikes Peak. We’ll be toasty again with high temperatures in the 90s to near 100 for the plains, 70s and 80s for the higher terrain along and west of I-25. Spotty showers and thunderstorms are most likely over the mountains this afternoon but brief showers could pop up over the I-25 corridor as well. Storms do not appear very likely over the plains.

Tonight: Any showers or thunderstorms will wind down this evening with the sky gradually clearing through the night. By morning the air should have cooled into the 50s to lower 60s for the plains with mainly 40s to lower 50s for the mountains.

Extended: Thunderstorms will probably be pretty numerous on Monday with severe weather possible with the strongest cells, but most storms will probably remain below severe criteria. Stronger thunderstorms will be capable of producing heavy rain at times early next week, and should these storms interact with local burn scars there will be some potential for flash flooding. Thanks to the added moisture and thunderstorms the air should cool some for a few days. Independence Day looks very warm and partly cloudy with a chance for isolated thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening hours.
