Family revisits what’s left of their motorhome after 117 fire

Tuesday night we told you about a family that lost their home in the 117 Fire.

Wednesday afternoon they revisited what was left of it, hopeful that not everything was destroyed.

Driving down the burn scar on Hanover Road didn’t discourage the Heberts.

They were hopeful, that just maybe, they’d be able to salvage some of the items from their home.

“Ah! Don’t. That’s my bible. That was my family bible. Oh my! That’s all my pictures, everything.”

But that wasn’t the case: their entire motor home turned into charred remnants.

“Right here was my daddy’s barrel flag. This was our TV, the fridge, the refrigerator, the bed over the top, and as you can see there’s nothing to salvage,” said Linda Hebert.

They also lost a trailer home they were slowly remodeling.

“Rubble. Call the garbage man to pull it off, that’s all about we can do right now. Once, the frame is twisted, there are no parts to get out of it,” said Joe Hebert.

“This used to be all the stuff my family gave me and it’s just gone,” said Jaythan Penton.

11-year-old Jaythan still in shock his home turned into ashes.

“I just can’t believe all of that is gone and we have to restart all over. We have to restart everything. I’m just sad this happened,” he said.

The Heberts had been living here for the last three months. They left Colorado Springs because they couldn’t afford the cost of living.

“[We] can’t afford it, our rent went from $720 to $920 in a couple of months,” Linda said.

Just as they were leaving, they came across a tiny object.

“A peace sign. That lets us know our dreams [aren’t] done yet,” Linda said.

One that Linda plans to wear around her neck reminding her that although they lost it all; they still remain a strong family.
