Marty’s Saturday Morning Forecast – Cool Start, Warmer Finish – 9/29/18

Today: The shallow layer of cool air that settled over the plains yesterday will be pushed east of the area during the day today. Before we warm up though, we’ll need to get through pockets of low cloud cover, patchy fog and possibly some drizzle over the plains early this morning. Although low lying areas may take some time to warm today, we should notice much warmer air working over most areas this afternoon. As the wind that helps to blow the cool air away from the mountains picks up this afternoon, conditions may become favorable for the spread of wildfires over and near the mountains in the Pikes Peak Region so the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Teller and southern El Paso counties from noon until 6:00PM. By late in the day the air should have warmed in the 70s and 80s for the plains, with mainly 60s and 70s over the mountains.

Tonight: The wind will decrease and the sky will remain mostly clear with the air cooling into the 50s for the plains, mainly 40s for our local mountain areas.

Extended: We will track a shallow pool of cold air that will be meandering around the plains of eastern Colorado over the next several days. Although it appears the cold air will generally remain east of I-25, it’s a close call, and it’s at least possible that some of this cooler air may sneak up against the mountains at times briefly over the next couple of days. There could be areas of patchy low cloud cover mainly east of I-25 at times during the late night and early morning hours through Tuesday. A weak upper level system should bring some clouds and possibly some spotty showers to the area Tuesday, but we don’t expect any widespread rain. Wednesday should be breezy and very warm with temperatures reaching the 80s to lower 90s for the plains, mainly 70s over the mountains. Cooler air will again work over the area Thursday into Friday, and by late Friday areas of rain, and possibly even some mountain snow could develop. Temperatures by Friday afternoon may be falling into the 40s and 50s.
