Crews respond to deadly structure fire in Colorado Springs

Firefighters with the Cimarron Hills Fire Department responded to a fatal structure fire in Colorado Springs Thursday morning.

At about 3:50 p.m., the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office identified 67-year-old Judith Barton as the victim of the fire. The cause is still under investigation.

Crews got to the fire just after 5:30 a.m. at a mobile home along the 1000 block of Western Dr. That’s near Peterson and Galley Rd.

“I woke up to the smoke choking me,” said Kristy Kruse, a neighbor living a few doors down from the fire. “It was scary, so close to us.”

The flames were visible for miles waking up neighbors living nearby.

“I woke up to the Sheriff’s Office banging on my door, I was concerned,” said Gary Hargrave, who lives across the street.

Once crews got on scene, the flames were quickly put out. However, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a body was found inside. At this time we don’t know the identity of the victim.

Two adjacent mobile homes were evacuated as a precaution, and those families have since been able to return safely.

Fire investigators are still working to identify the cause.
