Edwin’s Battle: Colorado Springs boy fighting rare cancer
Three-year-old Edwin Gadway has spent the last eight months at the Children’s Hospital in Aurora, his treatment forced his family to temporally move out of Colorado Springs. He has Neuroblastoma, and it ‘ s at stage four.
Edwin, affectionately known as “Eww, ” is in the fight of his life. He can be seen happy and jumping around like any normal kid, but in reality his illness is taking its toll. To keep a smile on his face, his parents are asking for help.
It’s a routine no parent should have to get used to.
“Pretty much every day he gets eight medications and it’s throughout the day — one in the morning and [once] at night,” said Sareth Gadway, Edwin’s mother. “I just try to stay on top of it and it’s time consuming, but we’d do anything for our boy.”
Josh and Sareth were just getting to know their son when their lives took a turn they never expected.
“It ‘ s the worst thing in the world to hear that your son can die any moment,” said Josh.
Now, play days at the park are long gone .
“I want to play ball with my son, but I can’t, ” Josh said. ” We can ‘ t go outside,” Sareth said.
“Edwin has a rare form of pediatric cancer called Neuroblastoma. It’s a rare tumor we find in children,” said pediatric nurse practitioner Kelly Drake at the Children ‘ s Hospital in Aurora.
Eww has been in-and-out of the hospital since September.
“I wish I could take all of his pain away and he didn’t have to go through this and have to suffer,” Josh said.
Sadly, chemotherapy has left him with a blood infection, among other life-threatening illnesses.
“These shots he’s getting are $25,000 a piece,” said Josh.
With medical bills stacking up, the Gadway family is asking for a helping hand.
“It ‘ s rapidly taking a toll on us, financially, emotionally, its destroying our family,” Josh said.
Right now, doctors say Edwin has a 50 percent chance of survival.
” But that’s a 50-50 chance I get from my son! I want to see our boy walk down and get his diploma, that’s our end game; to survive to fight this,” said his mother.
Even if Edwin beats the odds, he’ll have numerous lasting side effects from his treatment.
