‘Moscow Mule’ popularity is prompting warning from health officials

A drink that’s gaining popularity on social media is prompting health officials to put out a warning over the use of copper mugs.

Health officials in Iowa say that because of the pH balance in the drinks, using copper mugs without a lining can be dangerous.

If a drink has a pH balance lower than 6, and it’s in a copper mug, it could cause the copper to be leached out. That could lead to copper poisoning.

A Moscow Mule is made with vodka, spicy ginger beer and lime juice and the pH of the drink is lower than 6.

Health officials recommend using a copper mug that is lined with a different metal, like stainless steel, to make sure you don’t get sick.
