FBI Denver warns community of phone scammers impersonating FBI agents

MGN

DENVER, Colo. (KRDO)-- FBI Denver is warning the public of a telephone spoofing scam where callers are portraying themselves as special agents of the organization.

The callers have been faking the FBI Colorado Springs’ main phone number, so the call appears to be coming from the FBI on the recipient’s caller ID.

In some cases, victims have been told their identity and/or bank accounts have been compromised and have been asked to immediately move their money to gift cards or cryptocurrency.

The callers will ask for information to verify those actions have been completed and then will proceed to use that information to steal those funds.

FBI Denver stated past victims have suffered losses between $940 to $13,000.

Now, officials are alerting the community stating law enforcement will never call and ask individuals to transfer money to gift cards or advise them to move financial accounts to cryptocurrency.

Never share personal identifying information with a caller you have not made contact with before or have verified as legitimate.

If someone is posing as an FBI agent, find the phone number of a local FBI field office and call that number directly to verify any legitimate contact.

If you think you are a victim of this phone scam you are asked to report it to 1-800-CALL-FBI.
