Person dies after driving off a cliff north of Canon City

FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado State Patrol tells us a crash Saturday afternoon that sparked a small wildfire is fatal. The crash closed Fremont County Road 9/Shelf Road around 12:30 p.m.

A public information officer with CSP tells KRDO the driver drove off a cliff and died on scene. The road remained closed for several hours while CSP investigated the crash.

Crews with the Canon City Fire Protection District worked quickly to contain the blaze. A spokesman with Canon City Fire says the fire ignited when the vehicle crashed and became engulfed in flames.

The road was closed just north of Red Canyon Park in Fremont County up through the Fremont - Teller County line.
