Crews respond to scrap metal fire burning in southeast Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a working two-alarm fire Thursday in southeast Colorado Springs.

The CSFD said that crews responded just before 11:30 a.m. to 3315 Drennan Industrial Loop South, in a pile of scrap metal behind American Iron & Metal second alarm has been called.

"We don't know yet what caused the fire," said Ashley Franco, a CSPD public information officer. "Mostly what burned were scraps, to include some metal but (also) lots of different materials. There were some cars and propane tanks."

She said that more than 40 firefighters were at the scene, dealing with hot temperatures and possibly toxic smoke from the fire.

"There also was a private hydrant (on the premises) that wasn't working when we got here," she added. "It's working now. Fortunately, we had access to other hydrants in the area and our fire engines carry 500 gallons."

It's at least the second time this year that firefighters found a private hydrant not working at a fire scene.

No injuries were reported, and the fire was contained to the scrap metal pile.
