WASHINGTON COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Ten cattle are dead, and nine remain unaccounted for after a semi hauling cattle rolled on Interstate 76 east of Brush early Tuesday morning, according to Colorado State Patrol (CSP).

CSP says they responded to the crash near milepost 102 at about 2:58 a.m. on Sept. 15.

According to the initial investigation, the semi was traveling westbound when it entered the center median and rolled. Cattle escaped from the trailer, and three additional semis and a passenger vehicle struck animals on the highway, says CSP.

Patrol says an ambulance transported the driver of the cattle hauler to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators determined that 48 cattle were on the truck before the crash. Of those, 10 were found dead, 29 were located alive and nine remain unaccounted for.

I-76 is closed in both directions, and CSP has not provided an estimated reopening time.

Drivers are encouraged to check COTrip for road closure and traffic updates.
